In Michigan, minors (under the age of 18) have the right to confidential advice, testing and treatment for the following without their parent's knowledge or permission:
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs/STIs) are infections that are acquired through unprotected sexual contact, via bodily fluids or even skin-to-skin contact. More than 30 viruses, bacteria and parasites cause STDs. Some symptoms may go unnoticed, while others are quite painful. Treatment is available for many STDs, but a few are incurable and may lead to other complications. The only certain way to prevent from getting a STD is to remain abstinent from sexual activity. Otherwise, using barrier protection such as condoms correctly and consistently, while in a committed and honest relationship, may also provide some protection against STDs. Almost half of all new cases of STDs are diagnosed in young people age 15-24. Free Condoms are available from any District Health Department #2 office. It is recommended that high risk teens (male and female) be screened or tested for STDs, especially Chlamydia and Gonorrhea, at a minimum of every 6 months. If you question whether you are high risk, or would like to make an appointment to be screened or tested, please call (800) 504-2650. |
